EXCURSION TO KUTNÁ HORA
On this excursion to Kutná Hora, you will discover one of Bohemia’s most important historic towns, also known as “The Treasure of the Country.” It is one of the most beautiful yet mysterious places in the Czech Republic, thanks to the magnificent St. Barbara’s Cathedral and the Sedlec Bone Chapel (Ossuary).
KUTNÁ HORA: THE TREASURE OF THE COUNTRY
Known as “The Treasure of the Country,” Kutná Hora is one of the most important historic towns in Bohemia. Founded as a mining town in the 13th century, its rich silver deposits contributed greatly to the wealth of the Czech Crown.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY
The excursion to Kutná Hora will begin at the meeting point at 9:00 a.m. The journey will take a little over one hour.
In the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Kutná Hora, we will see the Plague Column, a monument dedicated to the victims of past epidemics. We will then walk through the main square towards the Italian Court, learning about medieval coin production along the way.
Before reaching the Italian Court, which once served as the Royal Castle of Kutná Hora and now houses the Town Hall, we will see one of the old city gates and the remains of the medieval walls. From there, we will enjoy a distant view of the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara, which we will visit later.
After visiting the Italian Court, a castle located in the heart of the town, we will walk around the Church of St. James the Elder. We will also hear the legend and curse of the Ruthard family.
We will then pass another small fortress that once protected the entrance to the silver mines and now houses the Czech Museum of Silver.
A few steps away, we will reach an open-air display of sculptures reminiscent of Prague’s Charles Bridge. The sculptures stand in front of the former Jesuit College of Kutná Hora, which is now home to the Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region.
At the end of the sculpture terrace stands the impressive Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara. Those interested will visit its interior and learn about its fascinating history and unique architectural features.
The guided tour will continue to a panoramic viewpoint, the former synagogue and the Stone Fountain, a unique example of Gothic civil architecture. Our walk through Kutná Hora’s historic centre will end in front of the Stone House, a remarkable Gothic residence whose architecture resembles that of a church.
Afterwards, we will continue to the Sedlec district, where we will visit the famous ossuary located in the middle of a cemetery once considered to contain holy soil.
The Sedlec Ossuary serves as a memorial to the victims of epidemics who, due to the circumstances of their deaths, did not have the opportunity to receive the last rites. Although it may appear somewhat macabre, the chapel contains the carefully arranged remains of approximately 40,000 people.
We will return to Prague at approximately 3:00 p.m.
