Only in recent years has Terezín once again become recognized as a tragic symbol of the critics, dissidents, and opponents of the Nazi regime.
The mission of the Terezín Memorial—the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic—is to commemorate the victims of Nazi political and racial persecution during the occupation of the Czech lands in World War II.
The memorial carries out museum, research, and educational activities and organizes visits to memorial sites connected with the suffering and deaths of thousands of war victims.
Although the fortress was built as a highly modern military complex in the late 18th century, its function has changed over the years.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY
The excursion to Terezín will begin at the meeting point at 9:00 a.m. The journey will take almost one hour before reaching the Main Fortress.
To help you better understand Terezín, the guide will share historical and technical information during the journey, which will later be connected to the events that took place there.
As we leave Prague, we will pass by the memorial dedicated to the participants of Operation Anthropoid. We will enjoy a panoramic view of the Main Fortress, which is an entire town. The whole town was used as the Jewish Ghetto.
At the cemetery complex, you will learn about the numbers of victims, the reasons behind their persecution, and the methods used. We will enter a museum to learn about names, events, and personal stories.
We will then continue toward the National Cemetery, while the guide explains the differences between the Ghetto and the concentration camp.
Afterward, we will visit the concentration camp, following the same route taken by the prisoners, beginning in the administrative courtyard.
After passing through the “Arbeit macht frei” entrance, we will reach the prisoners’ area. We will walk through part of the fortress casemates and continue to the firing range before exiting through part of the residential area.
At approximately 3:00 p.m., we will return to Prague.
